I have been catching up on your podcast after devoting every available free listening moment over the last 3 weeks to “The Brothers Karamazov”. It’s like a rich and varied meal that goes on and on, and amazingly modern in tone and themes as well.
But back to your podcast: my comment is on weight loss and exercise. I’m in the process of losing weight; I’ve dropped 30 pounds total since September but because I am working with a physician on this, I have the compositional breakdown as I go along, to wit: of my 30 lost pounds, most of it was fat (good to lose) and water (good to lose), but 7 pounds of it was muscle. Muscle as a percentage of my total boy weight has remained the same, but I have lost muscle mass. So the next phase of my program will include heavier weight training. I had been working with light weights, but my dr. says I have to increase the weight in order to recover my lost muscle mass. Besides making one stronger, muscle tissue as a much higher metabolic rate than other tissues, so the more you have, the more you can eat!
Because we naturally lose muscle mass as we age UNLESS we are doing work with our muscles, the phenomenon you described (i.e., that you can’t lose weight just with aerobic exercise like you used to) might be due to your naturally diminished muscle mass.
